Buddhist Extremism AKA Illang Kema
Apparently there have been some issue with the creation of a mosque at Kadawatha Road down Dehiwala. Navigating on Balance blog had a backgrounder.
In Ramazan this year, some Muslims started a thakkiya (small mosque) on Kadawatha Road , Dehiwela and were conducting tharaweeh prayers. The mosque was operating on a very low key and causing no hindrance to anyone. However some Sinhalese villagers banded together, along with a few monks who then sent a delegation to this mosque demanding them to stop conducting prayers. The activities of the mosque were stopped overnight. Some Sinhalese villagers had already started intimidating Muslims in the area and dumping garbage right in front of the building in question.
Deane summed up the situation pretty well. Upto now, Sri Lanka only had the some LTTE guys strapping bombs to themselves and jumping in front of the Secretary of Defence. We didn’t have the type who strapped bombs to themselves and jumped in front of school buses yelling “Allahu Akbar”.
Sri Lanka has some paramilitary factions, and segments of the established military forces which are religiously biased.
The second thing which we need to remember is that even though Sri Lankans are smart when considered as individuals, when taken as “people”, the majority of Sri Lankans are bleeding stupid. This was evident in the 1983 July series of incidents, when CBK lost her eye, and even now, when the cost of living is shooting through the roof.
Sri Lanka is not a secular state. If it was a secular state, the constitution wouldn’t give prominence to Buddhism. And when you have a president who came into power on the Sinhala-Buddhist nationalist wave, the people who voted for him are also high on Buddhist-Nationalistic meth. And you don’t want to piss them off. They’re not the type to burn themselves, but to take to arms in a very non-Buddhist manner.
You won’t go around Texas wearing a “Fuck Bush” T-shirt, you wouldn’t ask for a bacon sandwich aboard Emirates, you wouldn’t publish a blog post on the Prophet Cartoons incident after three years without getting hammered, you shouldn’t build a mosque down Kadawatha Road. In an ideal world, you would. But then, that’s the ideal world. This place we’re living in, is far from that.

I keep tellin people now that theres little if any Buddhists in Sri Lanka. This is another example of just how Sri Lankans are just plain intolerant and selfish. Extremism is a great way to drum up supporters and a great excuse for power and you find plenty in Sri Lanka from the lowest slums to the richest mansions that use it for exactly that. As you said PBG. Sri Lankans as a group are as stupid as they come and they will blindly follow any lunatic with anything that’ll get the blood pumping.
You forgot the Temptation 2004 grenade incident.
I do disagree with your title though. I think this is “Sinhala Buddhist” extremism not plain Buddhist extremism. Nowhere in ANY Buddhist literature that quotes the Buddha will you find ANYTHING thatcould even be misinterpreted as a condoning of even the smallest violence. Just because some morons hijacked the name doesnt mean we should continue with it.

I agree, it’s more the Sinhala nationalistic pride that is used to justify these things rather than stuff off a Buddhist textbook.
Not quite sure what to make of you linking my post and the ‘hammered’ bit. I think I’ve been picking on fundie-muslims too much lately, must switch to catholics and evangelists soon!

Just showing an example if Illang Kanawa.
No offense meant, hope none are taken. Can’t handle another Nilma Dole in my life! And you’re too good to turn into one!

Lol no, none taken, I just wasn’t very sure what your intentions were, hence why I asked. Of course I realise that post of mine was ‘Illang Kanawa’, it was great fun seeing all the kooks come out of the woodwork
But err, comparing me to the love-of-your-life Nilma Dole? Dude that’s just low. I am very offended.
Darwin - March 6, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Now now dah-ling… I said I don’t want you to turn into a Nilma…
And she’s not the love of my life in any way!
pinkboxinggloves - March 6, 2008 at 2:23 pm
I hasten to disagree, love can easily spring from hate and the way you and Nilma were going….. well….
I’ll leave that to everyone’s imagination

Dili, you’re an arse.
pinkboxinggloves - March 6, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Arse? since when did u become British?
Ne way, This kadawatha isn’t that kadawatha in Kiribathgoda, that’s the buddhist-supremacy place. My thing was directed as the sinhalas, not the guys who built the mosque..
Deane - March 7, 2008 at 8:34 pm
I know that this is not the Kadawatha down Kiribathgoda. This is the turnoff to your left down Anderson Road.
It’s something of a semi-Buddhist supremacy place. There is a temple down that road which is growing by the day with the Dayaka Sabha support.
And mine is directed at the Mulsims, and an observation on the Sinhalese.
And I’ve always been British
