V-Day: The Post Morterm

It’s the reason why birth rates in November spike, roses cost an arm and a leg, men go bankrupt, chocolate shops are broken into, and the reason suicide rates reach the sky. And now it’s over, I’m going to do a post-mortem on V-Day.As most of you might have realized by now, Godaya is single. Not a lot of women out there are willing to go out with jobless, not-so-good-looking bloggers these days. Apparently it’s something to do with choosing the strongest from the pack. It’s some animal instinct thing which is beyond my comprehension, but the result of it is me being single.

So this meant that I spent a typical “singles” Valentine’s Day. Not something fun when everybody around you is either getting flowers or sending them. The extent of my display of affection towards a better half, was to text the-closest-thing-I-have-to-a-better-half at 3:45 in the morning, and to receive a reply at 4:00 in the evening. Not helping. I did get the “I love you in a very platonic way” texts that flow around, but since I was barred, couldn’t spread the love from my end (as I usually do).

In the traditional manner of single people bashing V-Day, I think we’ve lost the essence of it somewhere. I’ve tried to dig through acres of cards, custom made genetically modified roses, jewelry, mountains of chocolates, but no one seems to value romance anymore. It’s all covered in layers and layers of merchandise and advertising, that it’s tough to find people who know what V-Day is all about.

On a more interesting note, the Sri Lankan blogosphere seemed to be on the same boat as I. Most of them appear to be single as well, looking at the anti V-Day posts that were flooding the blog world. Maybe I should start looking there for a partner from within my own blogging kind?

How was your valentine’s?

  3. i loved your article! i had an exciting valentine’s day too. i went to arpico to buy certain necessities. apparently, no one goes to arpico at 9.30 on valentine’s. how sad is that.

  4. He he… True… There are so many opportunities for us to spread da luv that we miss out on…

  5. well, I did’nt know it was valentines till like 5 in the evening when someone wished me on facebook.. And personally I am relishing the singledom cos I am too broke to fend for myself I doubt I could get some expensive cufflinks for another half! And there is so much adevertising it’s all begun to go unnoticed now.New yrs, valentines, then mothers day then easter.. its just crazy!

  6. a) why is ur blog all f’ed up??? It’s annoying to read :(

    n

    b) if u use ur head a little bit before u ask someone out, maybe,
just maybe u wouldn’t be single.. (but that’s just my personal
theory ya?) but don’t sweat it men… dating’s kinda overrated
actually come to think of it…

  7. 1) Deane is supposed to do an actual site for me. This is till that comes up.

    2) Advice noted :) But hey! I’m a spur of the moment guy ne?

  8. he he.. i didn’t see this till now. somehow, my adding you to my google homepage hadn’t gone as smoothly as i thought it had :(

anyhoo, valentines day always seemed overrated to me. the hype around it at least. and like christmas, the true spirit of it seem to be lost in all the consumerist packaging it now comes in. oh well, my v day celebrating was done in front of a mirror, wishing the most interesting person i know a happy v day ;)

  9. ps – speaking of getting a girlfriend from blogsville, how about princess shazrina? :P

  10. Now now… I know I’m not much, but I deserve better than that no? :P

  11. I second that Princess Shaz suggestion :D

  12. Noooooooooooooooooooo! What did I ever do to you people!!!

  13. Hey there Godaya! Just wanted to say keep up the ranting and raving:) he he I totally get what you mean about v day being overrated! btw my opinion has nothing to do with the fact that I too am single! its more like I keep wondering what saint Valentine would have thought of love, and romance going commercial!

Good one, I really enjoy reading your stuff in the ST Mirror:)

By the way, did you ever consider doing one of your observations on Sri Lankan manners- they’ve grown pretty shocking lately! I mean I’m Sri Lankan but havent been feeling very Sri Lankan recently!

  14. “The extent of my display of affection towards a better half, was to text the-closest-thing-I-have-to-a-better-half at 3:45 in the morning, and to receive a reply at 4:00 in the evening.”

Lol… Sounds like something she would do… :)

  15. :)

  16. Yikes, being single on a valentine’s day especially when every single freaking person around you was being paired up with someone else was pretty bad.Adding to the injury was the fact that my best platonic friend switched off his mobile and suddenely made himself unavailable on Vday AND switched it on PRECISELY at 12.00 am on the fifteenth.Maybe he thought near desperation would make me throw da ‘platonic’ part out of the relationship and proposed to him or something..(Actually he had a pretty reasonable explanation for the whole fiasco, he’d better have been telling the truth.Grrr)All in all, not one of my best years!
